7SS

-Last class we learned about society and culture; answers will be posted tomorrow.

-today we want to take a closer look at "culture"
-we've differentiated between society and culture (review definitions-society is a group of people who share geography, history, politics, economics, whereas culture is the way we express ourselves based on our society
-thinking about society then, how does it create culture?
-for example, we know that a big idea of society is geography/natural environment/climate--so it affects our culture/clothing—a society living in the Arctic will have different clothing than a society in the Caribbean (parka v bikini)
-read p. 138/139 Patterns of Culture—now we see how a culture forms

-read p. 141 Stereotyping

-now we see how discrimination and prejudice are formed
-do the following questions; I'll be collecting homework tomorrow

Cultures & Stereotypes
1.  a)  Thinking about Canadian culture, from a history viewpoint, name two friends of Canada (other nations that are very friendly or allies of Canada).  /2
b)  Think of Canada’s history (the things you learned in grade 6 and 5 SS), explain an event or situation that made these two other countries you named in part a above “friends/allies” of Canada. /2
2.  Think about the words we use in Canada; some of these words are ONLY USED IN CANADA:  tuque, toboggan, chinook, and loonie.  Choose one, explain how it originated/came to be, explain what the word means then use it in a sentence.  /3
3.  Think about recreation in Canada—what do we do for fun in our country?  Why?  /2
4.  Identify two other patterns of culture—do not include geography, history, language, and recreation—and explain what each means.  /4
5.  In kid-friendly language, define stereotype.  /1
6.  Identify a negative outcome of stereotyping and explain how it negatively affects quality of life.  /2
7.  Think about a culture you know.  Explain one pattern of culture that makes it different from other cultures.  (Hint:  think about clothing, the way that culture celebrates, the government system within that culture, the art within that culture, etc.).  /2
