Tuesday 2 June 2020

Good morning everyone.

See above the announcement for our Farewell and Awards Ceremony.
Because we cannot celebrate in person, we will be hosting a VIRTUAL event.
It will be very similar to our annual celebration in the gym, except that we'll all be online.
We'll be announcing the winners of various awards, the St. Boniface scholarship, and Honour Roll.
It will be held on Meetings, just like I did for my classes, so you all know how to participate.
I'll send out the invitations to parent and student emails closer to the actual date;
we hope you'll be joining us to close this extraordinary school year!

-In our last class we learned about castles and knights and I collected homework yesterday.  Please compare your work to the answers posted below then scroll down for today's lesson.

Castles and Knights - Answers

1.  Castles were constructed for defense and were very strong whereas palaces were constructed to be beautiful and weren’t designed to be strong.

2.  A motte is a large hill (natural or manmade) on which the keep is built.  The keep is the strong stone building where the noble lived.  The bailey is a separate structure where the stables, storage and barracks were located.

3.  Trebuchets/mangonels would be loaded with flammable or rotting carcasses which would then fling the contents over a castle’s walls.  A difficulty with these weapons was that they were very large and heavy so they required several people to move them; they were not quickly adaptable.

4.  A knight is a warrior who served a noble.  He was expected to go to war/fight whenever his lord demanded it.

5.  Apprenticeship is a training period where someone learns the skills of another, usually while under the other person’s supervision.

6.  To become a knight, first a boy became a page.  At this stage the boy would learn dancing, singing, manners, learn the stories of heroic knights, and take care of a knight’s armour.  The next stage was when a boy turned fourteen and became a squire.  During this stage, he travelled to tournaments with a knight, cared for his equipment, and prepare him for battle/tournaments.  He also learned how to fight.

-our new topic today is Towns and Guilds (pronounced gilds)

2.  Identify two hazards of living in town.  /2

3.  a)  What is a guild?  /1  b)  What were two goals of a guild?  /2
