Good morning everyone.

We only have a few lessons left before I start calculating grades and making report cards.  
It is VERY IMPORTANT you send your work if I ask for it.  
I have deadlines to keep and some of you need the benefit of a few more marks for Honour Roll
so keep doing the work to the best of your abilities.

-So, David made it to Denmark!  He met his mother and his daydreams came true!  I hope you enjoyed the book--it's one of my favourites.
-The chapter 8 questions are below; I'm collecting homework WEDNESDAY.

1.  Is King a likable character?  Explain your thoughts.  /2
2.  On page 175 (hard copy) or page 148 (PDF), David "has returned to them".  Describe David's feelings from this point to the end of page 178 (hard copy) and page 149 (PDF-ending with the sentence:  The dog licked his cheek eagerly, impatiently nudging him again and moving restlessly as if it wanted to get up.  It nudged him once more--and then jumped up before David could stop it..  /3

Health & Medicine-Answers

1.  The Black Death is a deadly epidemic during the mid-1300s.

2. a)  The Black Death was caused by fleas, carrying infected blood from rats, biting people. 

***Think about this—animal to human transmission of an illness—this is how COVID-19 is suspected of starting in Wuhan.

b)  It spread so quickly because towns were crowded and dirty and people starting running away from the towns that had the illness and going to small towns and they spread it to those people.

c)  Our governments shut down travel, closed schools and businesses, advertised cleaning strategies, and forbade socializing.

3.  Two other theories of the origins of the Black Death are that is was caused by Jews and that it was a punishment from God.

5.  The following people were practicing medicine at the time:  doctors, nuns, monks, and local women.

6.  A midwife is someone who helps pregnant women during pregnancy and childbirth.  They are important because they are saving the life of two people (the woman and the baby) and if the mother dies, it will be hard for the baby to grow up.

-we have a good idea of what life was like in medieval Europe during this time—we’ve learned about feudalism and manorialism, we understand the growth of castles and knights which led to the development of towns and guilds,

-we have learned that during the Middle Ages, a new religion was born (Islam), several powerful leaders emerged in government and the church, and an epidemic killed a third of the population of Europe

-we know that all this activity fell between 476 AD to 1500 AD

-during this time the Catholic church and Islam were growing in power, so today we look at how these two religions created an event we know as the Crusades

—we know that the land around the Mediterranean Sea was Christian until the birth of Islam in the 600s and then Muslims started to gain control of this land

The Crusades

1.  The city of Jerusalem lies in the Holy Land and it was a place for Christian, Muslim, and Jewish pilgrims for hundreds of years.  What happened in 1095AD to change this peaceful situation?  /2

2.  Review your map; why was this a concern for Constantinople?  /2

3.  Identify three reasons why Christians joined the crusades?  /3

4.  What is one problem people travelling on a crusade would have experienced?  What is the result; what negative impact did it have?  /2

5.  Review the motivation for starting the crusades and then, what happened to them over the next 200 years.  Why do you think the Europeans lost interest in the crusades?  /2

6.  Explain a positive outcome of the crusades OR Explain a negative outcome of the crusades.  /2
