Monday 15 June 2020

Good morning.

A classmate asked me on Friday if the activities I'm posting now (watching movies, reading a book, writing a poem, etc.) are mandatory.  The answer is no BUT if we were in the classroom, these are the things we'd be doing.  Never stop learning!

8ELA

-If you haven't already watched I am David, a classmate forwarded this address.  He was able to watch it there for free; I didn't watch the full movie once there, but it did play so I imagine you can watch it there.  The address is https://soap2day.to.
-If you've already watched it, you would have noticed some differences; if you'd like to discuss them or ask "why?", just send me an email.
-Maybe you're happy with the movie's content; if that's the case, your homework today is to spend time outside--you could write a poem about nature.

8SS

-Today's homework is to watch another historical movie of your choice.

7SS

-Continue learning about society, culture, and stereotypes so I'd like you to watch the Canadian movie called Jaime Lo, Small and Shy.  Please copy the address into your browser and watch https://www.nfb.ca/film/jaime_lo_small_and_shy/

Friday 12 June 2020

Good morning everyone.

8ELA

-If we were in the classroom, we'd watch the I am David movie together.  Unfortunately, we aren't so we can't.  However, if you're interested in watching it, it's available on Google Play and iTunes and there is a small charge; I think it's $3.99.  This could be your assignment for today.  If you won't/can't download the movie, you'll have to read a book of your choosing from your home library.

8SS

-Today you can go on Netflix and find the Netflix Series Original Empire Games.  It's a collection of six episodes with each one focussing on a different civilization, including the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks.
-If the variety of empires is not how you want to spend your SS time today, you could watch Braveheart (free on Netflix) or other Middle Ages-themed movies like Princess Bride (not totally historically accurate, but fun).

7SS

-We've been learning about society, culture, stereotypes and when you look at the news, it's pretty interesting timing
-We've spent the past school year, learning about the world and how it affects people and how people affect the world
-Yesterday's lesson had you thinking about YOUR personal culture so today let's take a look at what that looks like in others
-Today we're starting a video series on culture; each day I'll post a new video--there is no "homework" that I can measure.  Instead, think about the message of the video, think about why I've assigned it, and watch the news for information related to culture and diversity.
-Today's video is From Far Away; it is Canadian-made--I hope you enjoy it.  Copy the link into your browser.

Thursday 11 June 2020

Good morning.

Teachers are calculating grades so if your name is called for homework, be sure to send it in.

Grade 7 students should check their email--
the worksheets you see posted here are the same ones I sent via email.

8ELA

-We've finished the book and I hope you enjoyed it.  For the most part, it sounds like people liked the open-ending because while it is abrupt, all David's wishes come true.  His mother knows him and calls him "my son", he has arrived in a place that is safe, and completed his journey.  I heard from several people that the death of King was very sad but when you love someone, you sacrifice whatever it takes to take care of that person.  Your parents would do it for you, Jesus did it for us, it's what you do for love.
-I'm collecting the Character Relationships Web and Character Traits Chart from the following people; it's due today:  8M-Iris, Roman, Dwayne, Aiden and 8B-Israel, Munachi, Nevaeh.

8SS

-Yesterday we learned about the Vikings so today I'm collecting homework from the following people:  8M-Emily, Roman, Ramsen, Kristine, Samuel, Dwayne, Aiden and 8B-Gabbi, Sara, Anna, Shaun

7SS

-These last few classes we've been learning about society and culture.  We have defined culture as a way of life or the way we express ourselves.
-Today you will demonstrate your understanding of culture.

-For some reason, earlier I wasn't able to upload the worksheets so you received them by email; now you see them here (they are the same) .

-Review the two worksheets and you'll notice they are similar-not the same-read the sub-titles.
-One organizer is The Culture in Me:  Part 1:  The Teenager in Me and the other organizer is The Culture in Me:  Part 2:  My Parents in Me.
-The sections are the same on the two worksheets:  language, for the ears, actions/doing, etc.
-Begin with Part 1:  The Teenager in Me--
---what is the "language" of teenagers?  is there vocabulary you use that parents don't?  think about texting and the words you use with friends
---for the ears, what do teenagers listen to that parents and other adults don't?  think about songs, artists, celebrities that you and your friends pay attention to
---for actions/doing, what do you and your friends like to do in your free time that adults don't do in their free time?  how is your recreational time different from younger children and grown-ups?
--for prized possessions, what "things" are valuable to you?  if your house were on fire, what would you grab to keep safe?
---for read and see, what do teenagers like to read and watch?  think about books, magazines, videos, movies that you and your friends enjoy that parents or small children would not
---for food and eats, what do you and other teenagers enjoy eating and drinking that adults don't?
---for beliefs, what do you as a teenager, believe in and value?  what's important for people your age?
---for places, where do teenagers like to go?  where do you like to spend your free time that is probably different from little kids?
--be sure to write one or two ideas per box on the worksheet--once you've done that, you'll have a visual representation of teenager culture

-now do the same activity with Part 2:  My Parents in Me
-for this worksheet, complete each box based on who you are because of your parents' influence
---for the language box, what language or words do you use because of what your parents taught you?
---for the ears, what songs or kinds of music do you enjoy, because it was in the household you grew up in?  think about the music your parents listen to on the radio--do you know the songs and words?  that's because they are part of you because of your parents' influence
---for actions/doing, what do you do with your family time?  when you're all sitting around or planning a holiday, what will it be like?
---continue to complete the boxes based on how your parents affect your time and thoughts and beliefs
--be sure to write one or two ideas per box on the worksheet--once you've done that, you'll have a visual representation of your family's culture

--I'll be collecting this homework tomorrow.

-Going further back in time, towards the end of the Dark Ages, Charlemagne was bringing law and order and back to Europe.  It was during this time though, that a force was disrupting this process; this force was the Vikings.
-If you have watched The Vikings on the History channel or the streaming services, you know how violent they were.  Today we learn more about them,

-Last class we learned about society and culture; answers will be posted tomorrow.

-today we want to take a closer look at "culture"
-we've differentiated between society and culture (review definitions-society is a group of people who share geography, history, politics, economics, whereas culture is the way we express ourselves based on our society
-thinking about society then, how does it create culture?
-for example, we know that a big idea of society is geography/natural environment/climate--so it affects our culture/clothing—a society living in the Arctic will have different clothing than a society in the Caribbean (parka v bikini)
-read p. 138/139 Patterns of Culture—now we see how a culture forms

-read p. 141 Stereotyping

-now we see how discrimination and prejudice are formed
-do the following questions; I'll be collecting homework tomorrow

Cultures & Stereotypes
1.  a)  Thinking about Canadian culture, from a history viewpoint, name two friends of Canada (other nations that are very friendly or allies of Canada).  /2
b)  Think of Canada’s history (the things you learned in grade 6 and 5 SS), explain an event or situation that made these two other countries you named in part a above “friends/allies” of Canada. /2
2.  Think about the words we use in Canada; some of these words are ONLY USED IN CANADA:  tuque, toboggan, chinook, and loonie.  Choose one, explain how it originated/came to be, explain what the word means then use it in a sentence.  /3

7.  (answers will vary)

-we have a good idea of what life was like in medieval Europe during this time—we’ve learned about feudalism and manorialism, we understand the growth of castles and knights which led to the development of towns and guilds,

-we have learned that during the Middle Ages, a new religion was born (Islam), several powerful leaders emerged in government and the church, and an epidemic killed a third of the population of Europe

-we know that all this activity fell between 476 AD to 1500 AD

-during this time the Catholic church and Islam were growing in power, so today we look at how these two religions created an event we know as the Crusades

-read handout

—we know that the land around the Mediterranean Sea was Christian until the birth of Islam in the 600s and then Muslims started to gain control of this land

7SS

-Last class we learned about society and culture; today I'm collecting homework from the following people:  Victoria, Ethan, Cyrus, Riley, Feven, Catherine, AJ, Owen, Deion, Ava, Johanna, Zac, Samara, and Helena

Friday 5 June 2020

Good morning.

8ELA

-Yesterday I collected homework for chapter 7; the answers are posted below so compare yours to mine then scroll down for today's assignment

I am David Chapter 7 Summary - Answers
1.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, the main character David is travelling to Denmark to meet the woman he believes is his mother.
2.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, the man hates David because David's mom didn't return the man's love yet the man cares for David because he is the son of the woman he loves.  By caring for David, he is kind of caring for the woman he loves.
3.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, the character Johannes had the "job" of taking care of David.  This is because the man made sure that Johannes wasn't harmed and the man was in charge of the camp so he couldn't be nice to a prisoner so he made sure that someone was.
4.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, being at the farmer's was like being at the camp because David was forced to work very hard, the farmer used threats to force David to work (like them), and he was imprisoned in the barn.
5.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, David has dreams about what he'd like life to be like in Denmark with his mother.  He wants his mother to love him, he wants to be able to ask all his questions, he wants her to say "my son", he wants to never be afraid, he wants his mom to be surrounded by beauty, and he wants to belong.
6.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, David is inspired to escape the barn when he realizes that Carlo had been sorry for hurting David and David had never forgiven him so he wants to escape to let Carlo know that David no longer thinks he's evil.
7.  In the historical fiction novel I am David by Anne Holm, the first line of chapter 7 on page 149 is an example of foreshadowing.  "The wind was blowing icy cold and the snow was falling so thickly that David could not see his hand in front of him." is the first line and it makes the reader feel that something bad is going to happen because of the terrible, dangerous weather and how difficult it would be to survive outdoors.  The last line of chapter 7 is an example of foreshadowing because on page 167 it states: "The long winter had passed, and he was going down to meet the spring." and this makes me think something good is going to happen.  The reader thinks this way because winter with its bad weather and cold is finished which means spring, good things and a renewal of life, is where David is heading.

-today's assignment is to read chapter eight--the LAST CHAPTER!  WILL HE MEET HIS MOTHER?  WILL ANY OF HIS DREAMS COME TRUE?  Read the chapter and find out!
