Friday 17 April 2020

Hello everyone.

Please remember to pick up your belongings before next week Friday;
 anything left at that time will be discarded/donated.
School is open between 9 and 1; the office should be able to help you with the process
as teachers really haven’t been involved with this.

We'll be starting our class novel study late next week.  It's I am David
I'll be providing a link so you can read on-line but if you want the hardcover book,
please contact me TODAY so I can make arrangements at the school for you.

Grade 8s--I need your book titles and current page please.

Answers

1.  In the free verse poem “When I Was a Little Girl” by Joy Kogawa, the poet’s brother tells her to pray because they were passing some big white boys on the bridge.

2.  In the free verse poem “When I Was a Little Girl” by Joy Kogawa, the simile is a paradox because lilies usually represent peace/resurrection/a living thing whereas a bomber represents death/suffering/a machine.  So, the poet and her brother are flinging symbols of peace to represent death.

3.  (answers will vary)  In the diary excerpt “Enemies” by Shizuye Takashima, the mood on the first page is scary/anxious.  This is achieved by starting with the first paragraph’s topic of war, rights being taken away, and mass evacuation—the author also uses an exclamation point.

4.  (answers will vary)

5.  (answers will vary)  Acts of racism faced by Joy Kogawa in “When I Was a Little Girl” and Shizuye Takashima in “Enemies” are being forced to leave their homes, being put onto trains and being sent away not knowing when they were going, people being violently pushed onto trains, having to stay in the animal stables of the Exhibition grounds, having a curfew, losing their jobs, etc.

6.  (answers will vary)  Fears the Japanese probably had during this time period were not having any money, getting separated from family, not getting education for their children, losing their possessions, acts of violence, etc.

7.  (answers will vary)
