Thursday 9 April 2020

Good morning everyone.

There will be no class tomorrow or Monday (Good Friday and Easter Monday).  I hope your weekend is wonderful and that you can be grateful for family, friends, and good health.

The following comic is for your parents, but I'm sure you'll get a chuckle as well.

This is for all you moms and dads out there working hard to teach your kids at home.  I know it must be hard to manage the subject matter, juggle time on devices, encouraging kids to read, PLUS run the household. This cartoon made me laugh so I hope it brings a smile to your face as well.  Keep up the good work!

-Last class we learned about Amnesty International. If you think about our last few topics, it's easy to see that we're focussing on how people are working to make the world a better place.  We can think of this as improving quality of life.
-Today, we're going to build on that knowledge and we'll look at what's being done to improve "global" quality of life.
-Think about Viola Desmond and Nelson Mandela.  These were individuals who worked to make their situations and their communities better.  Can you think of other individuals who have worked to make the world a better place?   (Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Ellen, Malala, saints, etc.)
-Think about Amnesty International.  This organization started to make life better for two people in a difficult situation.  Can you think of other organizations that have worked to make the world a better place?  (Greenpeace, World Vision, UNICEF, etc.)
-Read text p. 118-ask:  At the end of this reading, you should be able to answer the question:  What is an NGO?

-Read text p. 119 then watch the video produced by the Canadian Red Cross.  It's called Responding to Disasters.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vvmJCc5rck
