We annotated, completed a summarizing worksheet, then wrote the summary. We reviewed WHY writers write (PIEED) and started learning HOW they write.
A classmate asked me on Friday if the activities I'm posting now (watching movies, reading a book, writing a poem, etc.) are mandatory. The answer is no BUT if we were in the classroom, these are the things we'd be doing. Never stop learning!

8ELA

-If you haven't already watched I am David, a classmate forwarded this address. He was able to watch it there for free; I didn't watch the full movie once there, but it did play so I imagine you can watch it there. The address is <a href="https://soap2day.to/" id="LPlnk314316" previewinformation="1" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; font-family: Calibri, "Segoe UI", Meiryo, "Microsoft YaHei UI", "Microsoft JhengHei UI", "Malgun Gothic", sans-serif, serif, EmojiFont; font-size: 16px;" target="_blank">https://soap2day.to<span style="background-color: white; color: #212121; font-family: Calibri, "Segoe UI", Meiryo, "Microsoft YaHei UI", "Microsoft JhengHei UI", "Malgun Gothic", sans-serif, serif, EmojiFont; font-size: 16px;">.
-If you've already watched it, you would have noticed some differences; if you'd like to discuss them or ask "why?", just send me an email.
-Maybe you're happy with the movie's content; if that's the case, your homework today is to spend time outside--you could write a poem about nature.

8SS

-Today's homework is to watch another historical movie of your choice.

7SS

-Continue learning about society, culture, and stereotypes so I'd like you to watch the Canadian movie called Jaime Lo, Small and Shy. Please copy the address into your browser and watch https://www.nfb.ca/film/jaime_lo_small_and_shy/

Cheryl Munrohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15078266948553417907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-557587238354967459.post-76059845285715572572020-06-12T08:24:00.002-05:002020-06-12T08:24:24.901-05:00Good morning everyone.

8ELA

-If we were in the classroom, we'd watch the I am David movie together. Unfortunately, we aren't so we can't. However, if you're interested in watching it, it's available on Google Play and iTunes and there is a small charge; I think it's $3.99. This could be your assignment for today. If you won't/can't download the movie, you'll have to read a book of your choosing from your home library.

8SS

-Today you can go on Netflix and find the Netflix Series Original Empire Games. It's a collection of six episodes with each one focussing on a different civilization, including the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks.
-If the variety of empires is not how you want to spend your SS time today, you could watch Braveheart (free on Netflix) or other Middle Ages-themed movies like Princess Bride (not totally historically accurate, but fun).

7SS

-We've been learning about society, culture, stereotypes and when you look at the news, it's pretty interesting timing
-We've spent the past school year, learning about the world and how it affects people and how people affect the world
-Yesterday's lesson had you thinking about YOUR personal culture so today let's take a look at what that looks like in others
-Today we're starting a video series on culture; each day I'll post a new video--there is no "homework" that I can measure. Instead, think about the message of the video, think about why I've assigned it, and watch the news for information related to culture and diversity.
-Today's video is From Far Away; it is Canadian-made--I hope you enjoy it. Copy the link into your browser.
Teachers are calculating grades so if your name is called for homework, be sure to send it in.

Grade 7 students should check their email--
the worksheets you see posted here are the same ones I sent via email.

8ELA

-We've finished the book and I hope you enjoyed it. For the most part, it sounds like people liked the open-ending because while it is abrupt, all David's wishes come true. His mother knows him and calls him "my son", he has arrived in a place that is safe, and completed his journey. I heard from several people that the death of King was very sad but when you love someone, you sacrifice whatever it takes to take care of that person. Your parents would do it for you, Jesus did it for us, it's what you do for love.
-I'm collecting the Character Relationships Web and Character Traits Chart from the following people; it's due today: 8M-Iris, Roman, Dwayne, Aiden and 8B-Israel, Munachi, Nevaeh.

8SS

-Yesterday we learned about the Vikings so today I'm collecting homework from the following people: 8M-Emily, Roman, Ramsen, Kristine, Samuel, Dwayne, Aiden and 8B-Gabbi, Sara, Anna, Shaun

7SS

-These last few classes we've been learning about society and culture. We have defined culture as a way of life or the way we express ourselves.

-Review the two worksheets and you'll notice they are similar-not the same-read the sub-titles.
-One organizer is The Culture in Me: Part 1: The Teenager in Me and the other organizer is The Culture in Me: Part 2: My Parents in Me.
-The sections are the same on the two worksheets: language, for the ears, actions/doing, etc.
-Begin with Part 1: The Teenager in Me--
---what is the "language" of teenagers? is there vocabulary you use that parents don't? think about texting and the words you use with friends
---for the ears, what do teenagers listen to that parents and other adults don't? think about songs, artists, celebrities that you and your friends pay attention to
---for actions/doing, what do you and your friends like to do in your free time that adults don't do in their free time? how is your recreational time different from younger children and grown-ups?
--for prized possessions, what "things" are valuable to you? if your house were on fire, what would you grab to keep safe?
---for read and see, what do teenagers like to read and watch? think about books, magazines, videos, movies that you and your friends enjoy that parents or small children would not
---for food and eats, what do you and other teenagers enjoy eating and drinking that adults don't?
---for beliefs, what do you as a teenager, believe in and value? what's important for people your age?
---for places, where do teenagers like to go? where do you like to spend your free time that is probably different from little kids?
--be sure to write one or two ideas per box on the worksheet--once you've done that, you'll have a visual representation of teenager culture

-now do the same activity with Part 2: My Parents in Me
-for this worksheet, complete each box based on who you are because of your parents' influence
---for the language box, what language or words do you use because of what your parents taught you?
---for the ears, what songs or kinds of music do you enjoy, because it was in the household you grew up in? think about the music your parents listen to on the radio--do you know the songs and words? that's because they are part of you because of your parents' influence
---for actions/doing, what do you do with your family time? when you're all sitting around or planning a holiday, what will it be like?
---continue to complete the boxes based on how your parents affect your time and thoughts and beliefs
--be sure to write one or two ideas per box on the worksheet--once you've done that, you'll have a visual representation of your family's culture

--I'll be collecting this homework tomorrow.
-Yesterday I collected homework for The Crusades; answers will be posted later this week.
-Today we're starting a new topic and that is the Vikings
-We know that with the fall of Rome, law and order dissolved. We've learned how Europe moved through the Dark Ages and into the Middle Ages.
-Last class we learned that as Feudalism, Manorialism, Islam, and the power of the Catholic church grew, the Crusades were happening. Understand then that they occurred over 200 years (1095AD-1300AD).
-Going further back in time, towards the end of the Dark Ages, Charlemagne was bringing law and order and back to Europe. It was during this time though, that a force was disrupting this process; this force was the Vikings.
-If you have watched The Vikings on the History channel or the streaming services, you know how violent they were. Today we learn more about them,
-read pages 240 and 241 then do the following questions; I'll be collecting homework tomorrow.
The Vikings
1. Where did the Vikings come from/What modern-day countries are the homeland of the Vikings? Why were they leaving their homes? /2
2. The Vikings were skilled in three crafts/skills. What are they? /3
3. What is the connection between the Vikings and Canada? Be specific. /2
4. What is a berserker? What is the modern-day definition of berserk? Create an original sentence where berserk is used correctly. /3
5. Identify one reason why the Vikings were so successful on their raids of other lands. Explain your thoughts. /2
6. Why do you think the Vikings were no longer a threat by the 13th century? /2
-we've differentiated between society and culture (review definitions-society is a

life was like in medieval Europe during this time—we’ve learned about feudalism
and manorialism, we understand the growth of castles and knights which led to
the development of towns and guilds,
-we have learned that during
the Middle Ages, a new religion was born (Islam), several powerful leaders

"The wind was blowing icy cold and the snow was falling so thickly that David could not see his hand in front of him." is the first line and it makes the reader feel that something bad is going to happen because of the terrible, dangerous weather and how difficult it would be to survive outdoors. The last line of chapter 7 is an example of foreshadowing because on page 167 it states: "The long winter had passed, and he was going down to meet the spring." and this makes me think something good is going to happen. Chapter 6 Summary Questions-Answers

1. In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, imagery can be found in the beautiful furniture, carved woodwork, the coloured, stained glass windows, burning candles in front of beautiful art, and the sound of a man praying quietly. All these images create sounds and sensations for the readers; we can "see" the setting of the church.

2. a) In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, it's a coincidence that the priest is praying to St. Christopher because this saint is the patron of travellers; this means that he watches over them and protects him. David is a child travelling alone so it's interesting that the priest's prayers are to the saint who would be watching over David.

b) David disagrees with the priest's ideas and he feels that a person shouldn't change his or her mind or let others influence your opinion.

This is because he remembers Johannes's death and how he himself felt like dying (because of the sadness) so he had decided to never grow fond on anyone ever again. He doesn't want to live because he has seen what he will never possess/he knows he is not an ordinary boy/he knows that he will never belong. He prays to thank God for the help and to tell him he doesn't need his help anymore because he doesn't want to live.

Towns & Guilds - Answers

1. Towns developed around castles because it
provided protection from enemies. Also,
the castles inhabitants needed supplies so by being close, the people who sold
supplies and services had lots of people to sell to.
2. (answers will vary but could include the
following) Two hazards of living in a
medieval town were that it was dirty with waste in the streets, it was easy to
catch illnesses because of all the germs, and it was dangerous because buildings
were built of wood and would catch on fire easily.
3. a) A guild is a collection of workers who are
skilled in the same craft and it sets regulations for working conditions.
b) Two goals of a guild were to prevent
non-members from working in that same craft, to establish the rules for
apprenticeship (training) in that craft, to set standards of quality so all
members were making the same product with the same value, and to set prices so
all members received the same money for the same product.
4. Guilds affected everyday life because it gave
members protection against abusive employers and non-members who wanted to
steal their job, raised their standard of living by guaranteeing a certain
amount of money, and it looked after members to reduce their suffering.
5. Guilds made life better for women because
they could inherit their husband’s membership or they could join themselves
which means these women who would otherwise have no income, could now have a
job and care for the family.
