-Find below the answers for chapter 6 I am David summary questions.  Compare your work to mine.

Chapter 6 Summary Questions-Answers
1.  In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, imagery can be found in the beautiful furniture, carved woodwork, the coloured, stained glass windows, burning candles in front of beautiful art, and the sound of a man praying quietly.  All these images create sounds and sensations for the readers; we can "see" the setting of the church.
2.  a)  In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, it's a coincidence that the priest is praying to St. Christopher because this saint is the patron of travellers; this means that he watches over them and protects him.  David is a child travelling alone so it's interesting that the priest's prayers are to the saint who would be watching over David.
b)  David disagrees with the priest's ideas and he feels that a person shouldn't change his or her mind or let others influence your opinion.
3.  In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, David doesn't want to go on living.  This is because he remembers Johannes's death and how he himself felt like dying (because of the sadness) so he had decided to never grow fond on anyone ever again.  He doesn't want to live because he has seen what he will never possess/he knows he is not an ordinary boy/he knows that he will never belong.  He prays to thank God for the help and to tell him he doesn't need his help anymore because he doesn't want to live.
4.  In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, David meets a woman named Signora Bang.  He likes her because she speaks to him in a mature way, not a childish/baby-like boy as if he were a small child.
5.  In I am David, a historical novel written by Anne Holm, Signora Bang's friend, Edith Hjorth Fengel and her husband lived abroad in a dangerous country, they were arrested with their one-year old son named David, the husband and son were killed, a guard smuggled Edith out, and he did this because the guard knew her and loved her.
6.  (answers will vary but you should infer that Signora Bang's friend is David's mother and the guard is the man who watched over David all these years and helped him escape.)  Understand that David's father was killed.
7.  (answers will vary)

-So, we now know why David is going to Denmark!
-Yesterday was a work class for the chapter 7 I am David summary questions.  The following people need to send me their work today:  8M-Dara, James, Jayson, Iris, Emily, Quentin, Ramsen, Kristine, Dwayne, Gabrielle Lucas, Athena and 8B-Israel, Athaniel, Theodore, Josh, Gabbi, Alyssa, Sara, Nina, Eric, Joel, Anna.
-Please remember that whenever you write about literature, you must include TAG.  While many of you remember it, you are still putting quotation marks around the book title; that is wrong.  You must underline or use italics for book titles since quotation marks are for poems, short stories, articles, and songs.
-You must hand in this work--we're coming into the last few assignments and they really do make a difference to you final score.  When your name is called, send in your work!

-Yesterday, I collected homework for Middle Ages Towns & Guilds.  Find the answers below; compare your work to mine then scroll down for today's topic.

Towns & Guilds - Answers
1.  Towns developed around castles because it provided protection from enemies.  Also, the castles inhabitants needed supplies so by being close, the people who sold supplies and services had lots of people to sell to.
2.  (answers will vary but could include the following)  Two hazards of living in a medieval town were that it was dirty with waste in the streets, it was easy to catch illnesses because of all the germs, and it was dangerous because buildings were built of wood and would catch on fire easily.
3. a)  A guild is a collection of workers who are skilled in the same craft and it sets regulations for working conditions.
b)  Two goals of a guild were to prevent non-members from working in that same craft, to establish the rules for apprenticeship (training) in that craft, to set standards of quality so all members were making the same product with the same value, and to set prices so all members received the same money for the same product.
4.  Guilds affected everyday life because it gave members protection against abusive employers and non-members who wanted to steal their job, raised their standard of living by guaranteeing a certain amount of money, and it looked after members to reduce their suffering.
5.  Guilds made life better for women because they could inherit their husband’s membership or they could join themselves which means these women who would otherwise have no income, could now have a job and care for the family.
6.   (answers will vary)

-today's topic is Health & Medicine

-last class we learned what life was like in a Middle Ages town and we thought about the impact of that lifestyle on people’s health

-we learned about the sewage and waste in the streets which would easily cause disease

-we learned about the risk of fire due to tall wooden structures

-we have also learned that trade was growing with the growth of cities

-today we will focus on that topic with a look into medicine and disease of the time

-read p. 232 (The Black Death)

-read p. 233 (Medicine and Magic)

-do the following questions; I'll be collecting homework tomorrow

Health & Medicine

1.  What is the “Black Death”?  /1 (Don’t tell me what it caused, tell me what it IS)

2. a)  What caused the Black Death?  /1

b)  How did it spread so quickly?  /1

c)  Thinking about the COVID-19 illness, what did our society do to prevent it from spreading quickly?  /1

3.  Identify two other theories of its origins, other than the scientific one from question 2 above.  /2

4.  Identify a common disease of the time (other than the Black Death) and research how it affected the victim (I want three facts about the disease).  /4

5.  Make a list of all the types of people practicing medicine during this time.  /4

6.  What is a midwife?  Why is this medical practitioner as important, if not more important, than a doctor?  /3
7.  Identify two solutions or changes to society that probably created a healthier and stronger population in the centuries to come.  (Use your imagination, look around your house, think about grade seven social studies, how do you fix an unhealthy population?).  Explain why your two ideas make sense.  /4

-Yesterday I collected homework on the topic of wealth and happiness.  The answers are posted below; compare yours to mine then scroll down for today's topic

Wealth & Happiness - Answers
1.  Answers will vary but could include Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and western Europe nations.

2.  Answers will vary but could include India, Mongolia, Madagascar, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Yemen.

3.  The countries would be the same as question 1.

4.  The countries would be the same as question 2.

5.  These countries have no report on level of life satisfaction:   Somalia, North Korea, Oman, New Guinea.  It may be because there is too much war (Somalia), the government is a dictatorship or monarchy and doesn’t want to share that information (North Korea, Oman).

6.  I think these two graphs reveal that wealthy countries have people who have high levels of life satisfaction.

7.  Answers will vary but may include the ideas of life expectancy, climate, education levels, medical care, and strong human rights.  Reasons will vary.

-we have a good idea of how wealth affects power and happiness so we now want to demonstrate what we’ve learned
-we’re working on a worksheet that has you thinking about the difference between power and authority.
-to help understand the difference think about a football game.  The players tower over the referees. The players are bigger, stronger and more powerful than the older, smaller and, often, out-of-shape referees. In a game, the players can use their power to knock you down, but the referees can use their authority to put you out of the game.  So, what is power?  What is authority?
-here’s another example:   A police officer has the power to arrest a person, but he or she       does not have the authority to arrest you for chewing gum in a public place.  So, what is power?  What is authority?
-review the worksheet—notice I have put a point value in every box.  You must write in complete sentences.  I suggest you print it, the fill in the boxes as you would in the classroom.  If you can’t print it, simply copy a version onto loose-leaf and then continue to complete the worksheet.

-complete the worksheet--I'll be collecting homework tomorrow

Tuesday, 2 June 2020

Good morning everyone.

See above the announcement for our Farewell and Awards Ceremony.
Because we cannot celebrate in person, we will be hosting a VIRTUAL event.
It will be very similar to our annual celebration in the gym, except that we'll all be online.
We'll be announcing the winners of various awards, the St. Boniface scholarship, and Honour Roll.
It will be held on Meetings, just like I did for my classes, so you all know how to participate.
I'll send out the invitations to parent and student emails closer to the actual date;
we hope you'll be joining us to close this extraordinary school year!

-In our last class we learned about castles and knights and I collected homework yesterday.  Please compare your work to the answers posted below then scroll down for today's lesson.

Castles and Knights - Answers

1.  Castles were constructed for defense and were very strong whereas palaces were constructed to be beautiful and weren’t designed to be strong.

2.  A motte is a large hill (natural or manmade) on which the keep is built.  The keep is the strong stone building where the noble lived.  The bailey is a separate structure where the stables, storage and barracks were located.

3.  Trebuchets/mangonels would be loaded with flammable or rotting carcasses which would then fling the contents over a castle’s walls.  A difficulty with these weapons was that they were very large and heavy so they required several people to move them; they were not quickly adaptable.

4.  A knight is a warrior who served a noble.  He was expected to go to war/fight whenever his lord demanded it.

5.  Apprenticeship is a training period where someone learns the skills of another, usually while under the other person’s supervision.

6.  To become a knight, first a boy became a page.  At this stage the boy would learn dancing, singing, manners, learn the stories of heroic knights, and take care of a knight’s armour.  The next stage was when a boy turned fourteen and became a squire.  During this stage, he travelled to tournaments with a knight, cared for his equipment, and prepare him for battle/tournaments.  He also learned how to fight.

-our new topic today is Towns and Guilds (pronounced gilds)

-by now we have a good idea of what Middle Ages society looked like, so we will continue learning about this theme

-we know what life looked like in the countryside, on manors, but what does it look like in town?

-read p. 226 then progress to 227

-do the following questions; I'll be collecting homework tomorrow

Towns and Guilds

1.  Why did towns develop around castles?  /2 (Notice this is a two point question—tell me why THEN ask yourself WHY THAT happened—don’t give one idea for a two point question!)

2.  Identify two hazards of living in town.  /2

3.  a)  What is a guild?  /1  b)  What were two goals of a guild?  /2

4.  Give two examples of how guilds affected everyday life.  /2

5.  How did guilds make life better for women.  /2

6.  Do you think the modern-day version of guilds, unions, are still needed today?  (Think about why guilds were created, then answer the question.)  /2

-now go to the Our World in Data website and we’ll study the Happiness and Life Satisfaction graphs—https://ourworldindata.org/happiness-and-life-satisfaction) and scroll down to the first graph which is the Self-Reported Life Satisfaction 2018 graph—know that the darker green the country, the happier the people and the darker orange the country, the less happier the people
-look for patterns on this graph
-do the following questions; they're due tomorrow

-Yesterday I posted the "answer key" the worksheet you worked on Tuesday.  I did not collect homework.  I asked you to review the answer key to learn how individuals, groups and nations can use their power

- we now have a good idea of how individuals like Beyonce, groups like the UN, or countries like Canada get power and use it

-we now want to take a look at how this looks around the world

-you probably know that there have been many technological changes in recent years and this means that the time it takes to travel from one place in the world to another has become shorter and shorter, and more people are moving from place to place

-all of us share the earth and we are coming together and sharing similar experiences; this is called globalization.

-read the handout Globalization

-as you can see as we share experiences with people around the world, our connections with them grows

-our closeness to the United States means we have lots in common with them and the fact that Mexico shares a border with the United States and the three countries share a continent would mean that we probably trade a lot with each other
-thinking about these three countries, some things grow in Mexico that don’t grow here and we want those things—for instance, Mexican tropical fruits—we are a powerful country and can buy easily from less powerful countries because they want the trade so this leads to a new topic: Fair Trade—read the excerpt from your textbook called Fair Trade--you only need to read the bottom of page 116 and the top of 117 (Fair Trade paragraphs)

-complete the following questions; they'll be due tomorrow.

Globalization
1.   Define globalization.  /1
2.  Explain how free trade works.  /1
3.  Look for evidence of globalization in your home.  Look at the labels and packaging of various items in your kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, and bedroom closets.  Identify three items and the country where each was made.  Your goal is to find three objects from three different countries.  /3
4.  In your opinion, identify one reason that globalization is a good thing.  Tell me why.  /2
5.  Imagine you are a student from a less-developed country.  Identify one reason that globalization is a good thing.  Tell me why.  /2
6.  Identify a problem that globalization causes and tell me why it’s bad.  /2
7.  What is fairtrade?  /1
8.  Go to the Fairtrade website (https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/Farmers-and-Workers)
and learn about workers for several different products.  Choose one product (tea, wine, bananas, etc.)  and identify two facts you learned about the item and two facts about how Fairtrade makes it better.  /4

Wednesday, 27 May 2020

Good morning.

Please see the school website for information about school re-opening on June 1st.

Be aware that it is not for regular classes or a chance to come to school to visit.

Grade 7 and 8 students are able to come in on Wednesdays to spend time with a specific teacher.
You must make an appointment, by email, with the teacher you want to see--do not contact the office. If you have had difficulty learning at home or if you need time at school with your teacher to understand big concepts you've been struggling with, I invite you to contact a teacher for a time.
It will be on Wednesday afternoon for grade 8 and the morning is for grade 7.
